Accredited Beauty Schools

Some beauty schools are advertised as being accredited, while others are not accredited. What exactly does this mean for you? Is it okay to attend a non-accredited beauty school?

Yes, if you want to attend a non-accredited beauty school, that’s acceptable. Being a non-accredited beauty school does not mean it’s not as good as an accredited beauty school. It does, however, mean that the school might not be up to standards with the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences. Holding an NACCAS accreditation means that the beauty school meets the standards and has the proper facilities and programs needed for a student to become successful.

As with any job, employers often seek students who attended accredited colleges. It ensures the students received high levels of training in an appropriate atmosphere. Attending an accredited beauty school would probably be in your best interest to ensure you received the best possible training with the best possible career outlook.

Keep in mind; licensing and accreditation are not the same things. You will always want to make sure the beauty school you are attending is licensed, even if they are not accredited.

While both accredited and non-accredited beauty schools can offer private scholarships and financial assistance, it is the accredited beauty schools that are able to offer federally funded aid to students who need it. Also, an accredited beauty school would typically be more expensive than a non-accredited beauty school, so the ability to offer this federally funded aid to students would be beneficial in order to offset the higher cost.

 When researching beauty schools, consider paying extra attention to the ones that are accredited. While it won’t necessarily hurt you to go to a non-accredited beauty school, the benefits of attending an accredited beauty school are too good to pass up.
